Well Done!

Sunday was a day to celebrate.

For the past fifteen months the Kidsworld children have been giving their offering to build a clean water well in India. We collect an offering each week and everything the children give goes to the mission project. This well is our biggest project yet, but I felt it was important. It costs for a well is $2000 through the Dalit Freedom Network. When we started the giving towards the well I promised the children we would have a party when we reached half way ($1000) and another when we reached the goal ($2000).

This past November the children reached the half way goal! They had given $1000! (In total they have given 1314.34 towards the well). Because of how busy December is with Christmas the celebration was planned for January.
So this past Sunday we celebrated.

We made tiger masks and paper dolls in Indian saris. Tried a new version of tag that some website said was from India, it might not be but the game was hilarious. It’s called “Billy goat.” You mark off the space the game will happen in. The “Billy goats” hands are tied behind their back and they can only tag with their head. We watched a video about what the Dalit Freedom Network is doing in villages. Then the kid’s favourite part pizza and ice cream cake.

The best part was the surprise announcement I got to make just before the pizza. About a month ago one of the father’s and his business partner approached me and asked if they could give the remaining sum needed to complete the well. YES! So, we didn’t have a Half-Way to Well Party. We had a Well Done! We Did It party.
After I made the surprise announcement one of the girls yelled out, “But Pastor Liz, now we don’t get two parties.” After I finished laughing I reassured her that I am sure we could find a new reason to celebrate.

January's Reading Challenge Review

This has been a good reading month. January normally is but I exceeded my expectations and my monthly average (7 books) and read 12 books. I finished three great non-fictions last night On Writing, Weird and Erasing Hell. I think I'll re-read On Writing in a few months, it was fun and insightful and there were a few sections I wanted to share with my writing group. The other two have filled my head. I tried to journal most of it but my mind is still swimming. I probably should write up a review. Weird was convicting in a positive way. Erasing Hell was a dark and challenging read but still good.

Other great reads this month were The Hunger Games and The Actor and the Housewife. I also enjoyed Goliath but more because it was a fair way to end the trilogy but it felt like something was missing, still a good book. Yay for good books! What event in the world has most shaped your worldview?
I'm not sure if this is a current "in my life time" event or just any event. Any event would be the death and resurrection of Jesus (I feel cheesy giving a pat Sunday school answer but it's true). If it is current events -no idea, probably 9/11.
What personal event in your life is the most noteworthy to you?
These are all very hard to answer, both summers traveling on Evidence, my internship in Swaziland, or my year in Japan. All were big life changing times.
What is something you hope to see in the future?
The Camino de Santiago de Compostela
What song reminds you of the happiest day of your life?
I've had many happy days, not sure I can class one as the happiest. If I hear Disney music I think of the family vacation. Sunrise, Sunrise goes through my head when I remember climbing Mt. Fuji. I am sure there are other songs that trigger good memories but I can't think of any at the moment.

Thankful Thursday -Deana

I am thankful for...

Deana Beers

I chatted with my good friend Deana today for the first time in a long time. We traveled on a Bethany summer team in 2002, Wow has it really been ten years? That summer was amazing. It was difficult at times, challenging, emotional, and so full of good memories. I had so many things happen to me and just growing up. It is one of the closest times I've ever been to God and it was impart because of who I traveled with.

We were such a strange group but it worked. We were able to be silly with each other and still have serious times. We had this plastic giraffe for a mascot name Stephan (because of the dinosaur in the movie Clifford) and took pictures with it every where. We saw the Bad Lands, Mt. Rushmore, and lots of highways. I had my first ever July 4th which was strange cause I was the only Canadian on the team. Through it all Deana was my girl (which was good since the rest of the team was boys). We did these crazy work outs every night and cried to each other when our campers were mean. It was great.

Deana is a good friend. It was so good talking with her today even if it was only through messages. When post-college drift happens there are relationships that don't really end you're just not in contact any more. Life just happens. I didn't realize how much I missed her till today. Also appreciate the wisdom and questions she gave me about a situation I am working through. She was very helpful. It was good. This is why I am very thankful for her. Yay for Deana! I wish I could give her a hug but she's on the others side of the world.

Writing, Hope & Best Word

Sunday I knew what I was posting every day this week. Actual writing did not follow the plan. Monday I had no energy; the simplest activities drained me. I got dressed and needed a rest. Writing did not happen. Tuesday was similar, I made it to the church and work happened but everything took twice as long. Again, no writing. I missed posting, but I just couldn't. I woke this morning and realized I am sick. I don't like being sick...it kills my ability to write. So this is what I would have posted Monday (you'll have to wait till next for the next Talking With an Atheist, sorry).

Best Word is awesome. I love my writing group! My friends and fellow writers motivate me to actually write. Only some times I don't write. I get all excited with organizing the group, finding prompts, sharing tips, and connecting with people that I don't actually use my writing time to write creatively. The plan is to change that this year. Last week, we set out writing for 2012. These were my plans:

Each month the group has a reading night when we share what we are working on. I shared once last year. I would like to have a submission to read at 50% of these sharing nights (I read a piece at this months meeting so only five to go)
By December I want to be in the habit of writing daily. I can't add this to my life right now but my plan is that in April I start writing 250 words a day. In July I increase to 500 words and in October strive for 1000 words. My other hope is nanowrimo's 1667 daily word requirement won't be such a stretch.
I will participate in nanowrimo 2012. I already have the genre, characters, and title. I am really excited for this story.
I want to revisit two of my earlier nano novels worlds. I think there are some good parts to the stories but I don't actually know enough about the worlds to work on the next draft. I was to create a binder/scrapbook for each of the worlds to answer some of the basic questions.
This last goal I am most excited for (even happy danced when I told non-best word friends). It is actually a goal for the whole group. We are going to self-publish an anthology with submissions from everyone (who wants to) in the group. There are many details to still work out but we have a plan and a time table. It will be good. So excited.

I think they are all possible. I am okay if I don't reach them all. Any fiction writing outside of November will be an improvement on last year.

I am thinking...my feet are cold and that I love that Tim Horton changed their cup sizes. My large tea is closer to the old extra large size...yay for more tea.

I am thankful for...people who help without being asked. There was a movie and games night at the church last night and clean up felt like a daunting task but everyone helped and it was finished so fast. It would have taken me hours to set the room for Kidsworld (the children's ministry) by myself.

I am wearing...a running out fit complete with a Mario sweat band and I had a "racer's number" pinned on earlier (the Kidsworld theme is running the race: RUN? (Are you in).

I am creating...worked on my cirtron shawl Friday night other than that all projects are on hold till March.

I am going...to paint with Donna at the Clayground.

I am reading...On Writing by Stephen King, 7th Heaven by James Patterson, and The White Dragon by Anne McCaffrey.

I am wondering...what I am going to edit so I can share it at writing group tomorrow.

I am hoping...to finish mission trip letter (so much procrastination)

Any Suggestions on How to Improve This Game?

What makes one game great and another game flop? I am continually searching for new games to try at youth group. Large group in the dark games are the best. In December we tested "Murder in the Dark" which I found on the Egad! game site.

It was good and people had fun but it wasn't great. We tried it again Thursday night. Again, it was fun but not great. I think the flaw is in questioning phase; it's just awkward. Both times the detective has struggled to ask yes/no questions. People not being asked questions get board and the detective has not been able to even narrow down the murder as a suspect. I would like to play the game again but without some improvements I don't think it will work with my group.

I am looking for any suggestions on how to tweak the game. These are the rules, with a few adjustments to the Egad submission:

Murder In The Dark

Purpose: discover who the murderer is.

Preparation: Prepare enough slips of paper for each person playing. On one of the slips you write murderer or simply put an X (I write M). On another slip you write the word detective (I write D). All other slips are blank.

After you hand them out, everyone gives them back to you or drops them in a bowl after looking at them. Whoever the detective is must make himself known. This is important because the detective cannot be murdered. There are three rounds altogether. Each round has two phases. The "dark phase" which ends when someone discovers a body and the "questioning phase" which ends when the detective makes an accusation.

Dark Phase: the lights are turned off. Everyone walks around in the dark (not in groups) until a dead body is found. The murderer walks around waiting for an opportune time to say "you're dead" to someone. When some is told that, they wait 5 seconds and then fall to the floor. The round continues until someone discovers the body and yells out "dead body." At this time everyone gathers around the body and the detective attempts to discover the murderer.

Questioning Phase: The detective can ask only yes or no questions from any one except the "dead body" (dead men tell no tales). Everyone has to tell the truth except for the murderer. The murderer can lie on any question except, "Are you the murderer?" When the detective makes an accusation, the round ends and the next round begins (unless of course the detective was right).

Exceptions: During dark phase of round 3 the murderer can kill as many people as he/she wants. After the questioning phase of round 3 the murderer must reveal their identity if the detective doesn't guess right.

The other youth leader and I are considering discussed these twists as possible improvements:

Adding a second detective or a Watson
Remove the detective's yes/no question limitation
Allow anyone to make an accusation and maybe even allow the accused defend themselves
Allow anyone to ask a question but only the detective to make an accusation

What do you think? Is this game redeemable? Would one of these changes improve the game? Would something else make the play better for everyone? It is hard to say if implementing a change will make the game better or worst. Do you any have any suggestions on how to tweak this game? Or maybe you know a game that is similar that I could try to compare the rules to this one. If so, please leave a comment.

I am working on not trying to multitask rather allowing myself to be fulling focused on one thing so that task can be done quicker and better. I also have found a 15 minute timer and then a switch in tasks helps motivate chores that drive me crazy.
We are often charged hourly rates for labor, but we never get to reciprocate in kind when promised completion times don’t match actual completion. If you could bill people for the time you spend waiting, what would be a reasonable amount?
No idea...and as long as I have a book or knitting it really isn't time wasted.

Thankful Thursday -Grandma

I am thankful for...

My Grandma Stewart

This is the Stewart clan at Christmas (minus my dad because he took the picture). I love my family. It was so good seeing everyone! It was a wonderful whirlwind visit but I was so thankful I could see everyone. My family stayed with my Grandma Stewart. It reminded me of the summers I would visit her and Grandpa for a few weeks.

I loved those holidays. I have such good memories of visiting the market with Grandma, walking to the marina with Grandpa in the afternoon, knitting and doing yarn crafts in the evening, and even all of us sitting and reading our own novels. Grandpa encouraged my love of fantasy and is why I'm reading through the Pern books. Grandma shared with me her love of mysteries by introducing me to The Cat Who.... series. I also must give Grandma credit for my love of knitting. I had learned the basics in Brownies but I didn't really get into it until high school. Grandma introduced me to a creative world of knitting possibles. I love to knit today because of my Grandma Stewart.

Those memories are very dear to me. I am so glad for every chance I get to see Grandma. I love her very much and for these reasons I am thankful for her. Happy dance for Grandma!

Rapture Insurance: Wish We'd All Been Ready

This has to be a joke.

This must be a joke, right?

Those were my thoughts as I listened to the radio guest explain rapture insurance. I was wrong. It wasn't a joke. Eternal Earth-Bound Pets is serious about providing the next best thing to salvation for pets in a post-raptured world.

"We are a group of dedicated animal lovers, and atheists. Each Eternal Earth-Bound Pet representative is a confirmed atheist, and as such will still be here on Earth after you've received your reward. Our network of animal activists are committed to step in when you step up to Jesus."

So if there rapture were to happen and I am gone those left behind will rescue and care for my cats (picture above). Really? I still hope it is an April Fools day joke. Insurance for Christians, in case the rapture happens so that their pets are cared for.

I guess there would be families worried about their dear Rufus or other fuzzy, feathered, or scaled friends if Left Behind series were to become a reality. If people are willing to track the pending apocalypse with a Rapture Index, leave messages for the un-saved and add warning stickers to their car bumpers why not invest in pet care insurance. Ten years of pet-peace-of-mind only costs $135.00 (plus $20.00 for each additional pet) your pets are covered for after-rapture care. I found these details from the groups FAQs page:

I will not be getting rapture insurance, and not because they are not in Canada. I am still working out my eschatologoical views (my beliefs about the end times) but I lean away from a pre-tribulation rapture but it is more than just that. I find the insurance/group schemey like a snake oil salesmen. I feel like they are taking advantage of those with a belief they don't share all most in a mocking way and make a profit. Maybe not but that was my feeling looking over the site.

For those who might be worried for my two earth bound kitties have no fear. FA were talking about while I was working on this post and he agreed that if the rapture happens and if he still lives close by he rescue and care for Inu and Kima. At least the pets are ready?

TWA Wrap Up: The Magi Talk

I hope you enjoyed the first Talking with Atheist. I did and I found it a useful way to think through the question. Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts with me either in person or by leaving a comment. This is a chance to wrap up the discussion.

Recap: The original question FA asked was, "Is it a contradiction to celebrate the magi who were practitioners of astrology, while at the same time condemning the use of astrology elsewhere in scripture?"

In answering, we Christians, showed that we are willing to accept that God put a sign in the sky be it a special star, a super nova, a comet, or an angel. We also seemed to fall into one of three camps about the actual question:

1) Doesn't Matter: Some answers focused on other facts of the story without answering the original question. Either the question got lost or doesn't matter. The sense I got was that this isn't an important question, the story isn't about what these men did but that God was bringing people to encounter Jesus.

2) Weren't Astrologers so there is no contradiction: Translators often interpret the Greek word magoi as "astrologers" but not all do. It's hard to say. There isn't enough about the wise men to actually know for sure. I think they were. Sciences as we know them today didn't exist at this time. Watching the starts and predicting the future were all wrapped into one. Examples I can think of are how both the Egyptian Pharaohs and Babylonian Kings had magians and wise men about them to give them insight, propheys, and even interpret dreams and visions. It seems that the Magi were probably these time of "wise men."

3) God's Grace: God knew who and what these men were and used them any way. It could be that God was preparing the way for Gentiles to be included in Jesus' mission. It could be that God was reminding us that he can use anyone even "sinning astrologists." Maybe God was reminding us that all have sinned but all can have new life when they encounter Jesus. I think Robin's answer was mine only worded better, "...could it be that God, in His grace, sometimes reveals Himself even to people of false religions...perhaps because they are sincerely seeking truth, not just blindly believing? Could it be He does this even through their own religions? Ultimately it led them to Jesus."

The Golden Apple

It's a writing group night. I love my writing group. We try to meet twice a month. The first one is a workshop night with a theme, writing prompts, and fun exercises. The second meeting we share submissions and projects. There is a prize, an old book. The winner has a chapter to sign, add to, decorate, or almost anything they want. Last month, after a year of attempts, I finally won the book and the Golden Apple (a special nanowrimo trophie unique to our local nano chapter). Submissions need to have an apple with "magical powers." This was my submission (Farwin is my main character and a dragon):

Farwin landed in the middle of the Lost Desert. His wings needed a break from the heavy air. Really he needed water or was the need for cherry pie. Maybe he wasn’t thirty maybe He was just very hungry. The idea of yummy pie caused him to want to eat food NOW! He looked around for something to munch on.

There was sand. There were rocks. There was more sand, a few prickly cacti, and still more sand. The sand was like a sea of, Farwin paused to think of the right word, "the sand was like a sea of sand". Then he noticed a flicker of movement out of the corner of his eye. It was then Farwin realized the rock in front of him had moved. He lumbered closer. It was not the rock that had moved but the camouflaged iguana sitting on the rock. “Are you edible?” Farwin asked the little creature more as a rhetorical question to himself.

“I would'’t be tasty.” the tiny voice squeaked.

“AHHH! You speak!””

“What did you expect? You talked to me first. Stupid dragon.”

“Excuse me?!?””

“You heard me, you are dumb. "Look at me I’m a dragon I am dumb. I talk iguanas and freak out when they reply." Stupid dragon, doesn’t even know desert iguanas talk.” with that the desert creature launched a spitball at Farwin hitting him between the eyes.

"Hey Now," Farwin returned spit fire and a massive spitball fight ensued. Suddenly a small iguana army magically appeared from no where. All of them were mighty spitball warrior iguanas and all of them were aiming at Farwin. Out numbered Farwin lashed out with his only defense, “Stop it or I will eat you all.”

He opened his mouth wide and prepared for a big bite. Just as his jaw almost bit the closest iguana and they all disappeared as suddenly as they had appeared, all except the original lizard. The iguana began to plea for his life, “Please don’t eat me. Please don't eat me. If you promise not to eat me I'll give you a silver dollar or a magic apple that will take you anywhere you want to go just don’t eat me."

“A magic apple, interesting? Is the silver dollar magical?”

“No, no it is not. Just the apple is magic. Weren’t you listening?”

“Fine, I’ll take both”

“That’s not how this works. The deal was I give you one thing and you don’t eat me."

“Hmm, do you have cherry pie? Cause I would settle for cherry pie.”

Outside my window...almost snowy fields. Nova Scotia weather can't decide if it's winter or spring.

I am thinking...this is an absolutely amazing day and kid's are hilarious. I asked the kids in the first service it they were Solomon and God promised them anything what they would ask for. My favourite response was "um all the video games...oh and that God gets all the glory and more video games".

I am thankful for...caffeine.

I am wearing...a running out fit complete with a Mario sweat band and I had a "racer's number" pinned on earlier (the Kidsworld theme is running the race: RUN? (Are you in).

I am creating...there are a lot of projects started but everything is hibernating.

I am going...to have a good week and finally send out my mission trip prayer letters.

I am reading...On Writing by Stephen King, The Actor and the Housewife by Shannon Hale, and Goliath by Scott Westerfeld.

I am wondering...what I'm going to write about tomorrow.

I am hoping...to finish mission trip letter today (so much procrastination)

I am looking forward to...lunch and writing group.

I am hearing...Grimm (the show).

Around the house...I want to hang new curtains and maybe move the couch.

One of my favorite things...good books.

A few plans for the rest of the week: biggest things are writing group tomorrow night and youth group later this week. I'd like to go to the movies but I don't think it will work out.

Talking with an Atheist: The Magi Talk

One of my dearest friends is an atheist, in fact he is my Favourite Atheist (FA). He tries not to hold my faith in Jesus against me and I try to offer him the same courtesy. The friendship has lead to some interesting conversations and fun debates. Often he will ask me a question I've never even considered. In trying to attempt a response I feel completely out of my depth. I'll say something like "I don't know let me think about that" and I'll ponder, seek others thoughts, start researching. But normally the topic is too big and takes up to much time and energy. I never develop a response and sadly the topic is shelved for Future Liz to figure out.

Well, no more, no more hiding, putting off, or procrastinating. I am going to find answers for the Favourite Atheist...or at least blog about the questions and maybe find answers. Please join the discussion. Add your thoughts or counter arguments. My one request, which ever side of the debate you are play nice with the other children in the sand box. No throwing toy trucks, dirt, or names at each other -thank you.

The Topic:
FA: I read an interesting article today about an apparent contradiction in your scriptures. I wonder if you've heard it before.

Me: Okay, what was it?

FA: The Bible condemns astrology, right?

Me: Yes

FA: The magi read the stars to find that the King of the Jews was born. They are credited as doing a good thing but charting the stars as signs about future leaders would be astrology -something the Hebrew Law is against.

Me: Interesting, I haven't heard this before. Let me think about it.

My "thinking" was me asking two friends how they would responded. My first friend is a pastor, I've already run this response by FA and will include the counter argument. The other friend is a prof at the divinity college. We just talked about this earlier tonight so the idea is new to me and FA is reading it for the first time (Hi Friend *waves*).

The Astronomers Argument:
The magi were astronomers not astrologers. These scientist were watching and carting the night sky when God put a star in the sky that would be a remarkable sign to them. They did research and decided to investigate (is there any know prophesy that says that a star would mark the birth of the Messiah?)

FA's Reaction: The science of astronomers at this time would have still be closely associated with magic and astrology. Even if God put a star in the sky for them to follow how they noticed it would have been a condemned magical act.

Celestial Being Thought:
In scripture the word used for "stars" or celestial bodies often (he might have said always but I don't want to put words in his mouth if he didn't) refer to angels. The example was the Lucifer was the "bright and morning star." An angel could have been sent to light the place Jesus was, been close the the earth, and stood in one place. If it was an angel it would have been a specific messenger to these wise men. I think this means that when the magi were saying "we saw his star in the east..." the word used for "star" could also mean "angel".

What do you think? Is there a flaw in either argument? Is there a better response? Or do you have a counter argument for either they were astronomers or it was an angel arguments?

For me the questions that the magi raise were: How did they know that this "star" or celestial being was a sign? Is there writings, oral teachings, or a prophecy that lead them to this conclusion?Who were these guys and what did they do? Where did they go after they met the toddler Jesus? Why didn't they stick around and see what would become of him? Those might not be connected to the current discussion.

2012 Chunkster Challenge

The Challenge:
To read longer books of 450 pages or more in size hosted by Chunkster Reading Challenge.

The Rules:

No audio books. (There are exceptions to this rule.)
No e-books allowed. This was discussed in much detail in the 2011 challenge. The short version: a chunkster isn’t a challenge if you’re reading it on an e-reader. (There are exceptions to this rule.)
This year for the first time, essay, poetry, and short story collections will be allowed. Collections have to be read in their entirety to count. If you’ve needed a reason to finally pick up your copy of The Collected Works Of ____ now is the time.

Between church life, writing group, and friends I am not home alone often -meaning I am not renting movies to fill the apartment with sound. I think I would like to average 5 movies a month again. The Simple Woman Daybook 91

Outside my window...the sun's glare on my computer screen is just too much so the blinds are closed. I would imagine it is a bright winter day.

I am thinking..."why do some activities work with one group of children and not with another?" Or how the same game, idea, activity can work one time with a group but the next time it could flop then later it could be the best thing ever.

I am thankful for...volunteers.

I am wearing...a running out fit complete with sweat band and I had a "racer's number" pinned on earlier (the Kidsworld theme is running the race: RUN? (Are you in).

I am creating...a citron (knit shawl).

I am going...home to nap and read.

I am reading...On Writing by Stephen King

I am wondering...which reading challenges to attempt this year.

I am hoping...that I don't crash and nap all afternoon.

I am looking forward to...a nap

Around the house...normal house cleaning stuff.

One of my favorite things...playing board games with friends which happen a lot this week which was very happy!

A few plans for the rest of the week: I'm going to have tea with the girls tomorrow. Writing group, Life Group, youth group and GEMS all start back up this week. I aslo think there will be more games nights.

Success and Failures: A Look the 2011 Reading Challenges

I went a little overboard with the reading challenges last year....10 in total plus my own going reading challenges the Agatha Christie Reading Challenge and the Alphabet Mystery Reading Challenge. Some might have questioned my sanity, no some did, they told me they did. It was a lot but challenges are fun. I was successful on a few (4), came close on one, and completely failed on others. Best of Books 2011

Reading is one of my favourite ways to unwind and refresh. I love a page turner I can't put down. I appreciate when friends make book suggestions or participating in reading challenges because they introduce me to a whole new world. With that in mind, I looked over my list of books read over 2011. These are a few that stood out:

Non-Fiction
The Cheapskate Next Door –Jeff Yeager. He had a completely different way of thinking about money. It was good for me. It was a fun read full of real life examples, extremes, and practical suggestions.
Jesus for President –Claiborne & Haw. I found the concept challenging, enlightening, and refreshing. I read it too fast to fully engage with it but I am planning on re-reading it this year more slowly.
Against Medical Advice –James Patterson. I listened to this one as an audio book. It's the true story of a boy with Tourette's Syndrome and his family who struggled with medical establishment trying to help but often the "cure" was as debilitating and the symptoms.

Fiction
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn –Betty Smith. I just loved this story. It is a new read again Liz favourite.
The Soprano Sorceress –L. E. Modesitt. I started the first book of this fantasy series in December and am trying to find the third book. It was a neat world with a complex political and magical system and a great leading heroine.
The Princess Academy –Shannon Hale. It is a well told children's story with good characters, conflict, resolutions, and twists. I wish she would write more in this world. I like the author. I've read a few different things by her but only realized this year they were all by her...and actually re-read her chick lit. novel Austenland (which almost made this list) because I enjoy her style so much.
I’d Tell You I Love You But Then I’d Have To Kill You –Ally Carter. Another fun young adult series. I like everything she has written so far and I am looking forward to the next book in the Gallagher Academy to be released.
The Help –Kathryn Stockett. I signed this out of my library before it was announced that it would be a movie because one of the librarians recommended it. It was an interesting read. I remember enjoying it. The story is well told and the style was paced well. It was an interesting look at "the South".

Mount TBR Reading Challenge

The Challenge:
My Reader's Block hosts the Mount TBR Challenge. Most book lovers have a "To Be Read" pile. This challenge is to read some of those books that have been waiting months....or years to be finished.

The Rules:

Once you choose your challenge level, you are locked in for at least that many books. If you find that you're on a mountain-climbing roll and want to tackle a taller mountain, then you are certainly welcome to upgrade.
Challenge runs from January 1 to December 31, 2012.
You may sign up anytime from now until November 30th, 2012.
Books must be owned by you prior to January 1, 2012. No ARCs (none), no library books. No rereads. Book Chick City is hosting this reading challenge for mystery and suspense lovers. The point is to read mystery or suspense books.

The Rules:

Timeline: 01 Jan 2012 - 31 Dec 2012
You don't have to select your books ahead of time, you can just add them as you go. Also if you do list them upfront you can change them, nothing is set in stone! The books you choose can crossover into other challenges you have on the go.
You can join at anytime. All books read in 2012 count towards the challenge regardless of when you sign up.
At the beginning of Jan 2012, you will find a link to specific month to add your reviews.
Audiobooks do not count, but all other formats are accepted.
This challenge can crossover to other challenges.
You DO NOT have to write reviews of the books you read, but if you decide you would like to then Mr Linky will be available each month so you can link up your reviews.

Finishing the Series Reading Challenge

The Challenge:
Yvonne hosts The Finishing the Series Reading Challenge to motive herself and others to finish series they have started.

The Rules:

All books that are part of a continuing series qualify (i.e. Debbie Macomber's Cedar Cove, Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum, James Patterson's Alex Cross, etc. etc.)
It doesn't matter if you have 1 or 10 books in a series to complete it, it qualifies (i.e. if you only need to read one more Sookie Stackhouse book to complete the goal, that's fine) The goal is to complete a series from wherever you are up to until the last published book.
The qualification period is January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012. Books must be read during this time frame to count.

The Best of Bowl of Stew(art) 2011

2011 was Bowl of Stew(art)’s best year –EVER! It really was. I know, I know, it sounds like a cliché. Every year-end review says is was a great year -but it was truly a great blogging year for me. I posted more than any previous year, was happy with the overall content, and celebrated my blogs 1000th Post WOOT! Through out the year the comments and reader support has been wonderful and encouraging.

Even the stats have been great. Overall year visits to the site were 40% higher than 2010. I thought that was a fantastic accomplishment that April surpassed last year’s record for the highest hits in a month with 549 unique visits to the blog. That was until July which 704 hits! How could I possibly expect more than that? Everyone who visits the site made that happen and it made me smile. So....there are no words for the shock I had in November when the site got 804 hits. Thank you everyone who keeps visiting Bowl of Stew(art)! You make me smile and do a little happy dance.

I am not sure what 2012 will hold. I plan to keep the weekly Simple Woman Daybooks, Thankful Thursdays and maybe the Friday 5s. It is easy to get too ambitious but I hoping bring back Rate the Fun board game reviews, share more of my fiction and maybe add some new monthly features.

H is for Habits, Home, Happiness & 2012

I love new beginnings. The best time to colour is with a new box of crayons. The most exciting time to write is in a notebook. I love January for this reason. It is a new year full of promise and possibilities. I look forward to setting goals and making resolutions each year. And as much as everyone says "no one keeps resolutions" I actually kept my 2011 challenge of not eating at fast food place. There were a few minor exceptions. Even in those situations I didn't have a burger (which was what I wanted to avoid) and over the year it only happen a handful of times (from almost twice a week). I am happy with the change.

A few years back realized that the goals I was setting were an alliteration. I decided that 2009 I would be The Year of the Letter "C”. The clear goals kept me focused but not overwhelmed and the alliteration was quirky enough that it made remembering fun. So, I kept it going. 2010's goals were centered around the Letter "L” and 2011 was all about the Letter "F". For 2012, the key words are Habits, Home, and Happiness, making this the Year of the Letter “H”.

Habits –I want to improve the habits like my wake up and bedtime routines, monthly menu planning, cleaning the house, writing and editing, and how I spend. There are things I know are good for me like journaling or eating healthy but when my schedule gets full or I feel overwhelmed these good things get pushed to the sides so I can "cope" but create a worst situation. My goal is make these good things more engrained habits so that they don't get lost in the midst of stress.

Home –I love hosting thought none of my friends would know that since no one is ever invited over to my place. That is going to change this year. My apartment is going to go from place I sleep to a welcoming home. The task is more then a little overwhelming so I am breaking it into stages that tie in with the above habits.

Happiness –I realize this seems like an impossible goal. "Happiness" is an allusive, abstract term. How could I actually create happiness? After reading the Happiness Project I realized that there are people and activities that bring me joy. My goal is to makes sure that I am not so stressed or overwhelmed this year in order to have the time to do the things that make me joyful. Those happy things are stuff live board game nights with friends, going to plays, writing, drawing, card making, knitting, hmmm crafts in general, reading, and having people over.

So those my 2012 goals. I think it is going to be great year. What goals, challenge, or resolutions have you set for the new year?

Outside my window...the rainy almost green fields and forest behind the church...I thought this was winter. Where is all the snow? It was here before I left for Christmas.

I am thankful for...safe flights.

I am wearing...a white and black skirt with a maroon blouse. They don't really go together...but they both travel well and I haven't unpacked yet (I went from the airport to a friend's place and didn't get home till 1am).

I am going...home after church.

I am wondering...if I am ready for this morning. I think I am :)

I am thinking...it is a good day for a drive which is a good thing because the whole family is about ready to hop in the car for a five and a half hours drive to see the Stewart side of the family.

I am thankful for...my sister who wrote a letter to Santa asking him to wait to deliver gifts till I could be with the family.

I am wearing...jeans, a red shirt, peas in a pod earrings and a Santa hat.

I am going...to Grandma's house, first we're going to David's for Christmas dinner then to Grandma's house.

I am reading...On Writing by Steven King.

I am wondering...why if my tummy is up set or just hungry.

I am hoping...that I am not getting sick.

I am looking forward to...seeing all of the Stewart and Willson families over the next few days.

I am hearing...my sister calling for my mom, my dad asking questions about my new gps TomTom, and the clock chiming.

Around the house...I'm not going to think about it till I get home.

I am pondering...about the NaNo novel I wrote in 2008. I was talking to my Aunt last night and the story came up. I forgot how much I liked the story and how much potential it had.

Advent 2011: Joy & Love

The days have been zooming by. I blinked, missed a two Sundays of Advent, and Christmas was here. Where did the days go....It's Christmas already. It has been a busy three weeks but also very good days. These days have been filled with joy (third Sunday of Advent) and love (fourth Sunday of Advent). And it has been wonderful. There have been hiccups, bumps, and even dips into despair from my car being out of commission for five days to just feeling overwhelmed and lonely this last week. And in all of that it has still been good. I am blessed and loved.

In a few hours I'll be flying home, I'm almost able to think about it (if I let myself get too excited before everything here was done my head would "check-out" and I would not have been able to focus on the important things here). It is going to be an awesomely grand week with my family. Lee-Ann (my 11 year old sister) wrote a letter to Santa explaining that I would not be arriving till today so could he please wait to deliver the gifts till tonight so we could all open them tomorrow as if it was Christmas, she doesn't mind waiting. My sister is the sweetest bestest sister! I love her muchly! I hope your days are equally bright and full of hope, peace, joy and love.

Jon is the youth and children's pastor at another church in the area. Since I moved here, five years ago -wow it's been five years, Jon has been a great friend, mentor, and supporter. Every few months we get together for coffee. We talk about what's new in our ministries, what is working, and what is needing improvements. We bounce ideas each other and suggest resources. I always leave inspired. I am thankful for all this suggestions, chats, and ideas.

Advent 2011: Peace

Have you ever needed a Christmas tree decorated quickly? I have a solution -relay race. Yes, a massive tree decorating relay race with 24 children. It is chaotic but hilarious to watch. The kids loved the game Sunday and the aesthetic results are decent(minus a child being accidentally & temporarily being tied/tangled to a tree with garland).

Standing in the middle of a blur of children, lights, ornaments, filled me with joy and peace...which is crazy. December has become associated with same same rush and pressure the kids were under in the race. It is all hustle and bustle. There are gifts to buy, food to prepare, cards to send, trees to trim, halls to deck, and so many events to attend. There are concerts, parades, musicals, special services, office parties, club parties, cookie exchanges, craft days and community celebrations. It is to do list is worst if you are volunteering or involved in behind the scenes because you have added meetings, rehearsals, practices, preparations, setting up, recruiting helpers, and clean up. I love the season but it can get a little overwhelming. Christmas can be chaotic.

The first sermon I ever wrote was about living at peace in the midst of chaos. I looked at Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30). True peace is not the absence of chaos but the discovering of how to be at rest in the midst of storms. I have a great story that goes with this...but I can't find it. I believe it is by Katherine Marshall but that doesn't help. I'm not going to stress about it, I'm going to go eat supper.

I am creating...since I'm letting the novel "breath" (I actually found that term in an article on how to edit your novel) I'm back to knitting a shawl and debating finishing the baby blanket. There are also Christmas cards to make at some point.

I am thankful for...

Chris Baty

We have never met, never chatted, never exchanged emails (unless you count mass emails) but I am thankful for Chris Baty. In the summer of 1999, Baty had a crazy idea that it would be possible to write a novel in 30 days. 21 people participate. The next year they moved the project to November "to more fully take advantage of the miserable weather" And that was the start of National Novel Writing Month.

I discovered NaNoWriMo in the summer of 2007. I have participated every year since then. This high vilocity write by the seat of your pants approach to writing has added creativity and joy to my past five Novembers. The experience has always been rewarding even in the most stressful moments. I am thankful to Chris Baty for creating this writing challenge and community. I am thankful for his pep talks and inspirational videos every year. And I am thankful that because of him Best Word exists and I have met some great writers and amazing friends.

Yay for Chris Baty!

With twenty minutes to spare I crossed the NaNo finish line, earned a purple "WINNER!" bar, heard the cheering and whooping from the OLL staff, and the satisfaction of knowing that I wrote a "novel" (it is really more of a rough pre-first draft outline but it has flying moose) in 30 days. And now it is time to edited...

...hmm nope, let's try that again: And now it is time ~~to edited~~ for a long winters nap...but first it is Victory Dance Time!

*happy dance, happy dance, happy dance*

Also eating cookies, feeding the cats, and cleaning out the fridge, and everything else that I said could wait till December to be done.

Thank you to all my friends and fellow writers. I loved this year but it seemed more challenging. The ideas and words did not flow. It has been an interesting month, as you can see but the progress chart:
I would have given up a few times except for your encouragement. So thank you to everyone not only cheered me on but who put up with my whining and kicked my procrastinating butt into gear. Thank you to everyone on facebook who liked my word count updates. It made the last 48hours easier. Writing is a solo activity, however I don't these 50,294 words exist without you. THANK YOU!

Advent 2011: Hope

Ever have one of those days? You know the days when you feel like you should have just stayed in bed? One of those days when it seems that everything that could go wrong does? This Sunday was one of those days; I don't even know were to begin.

It started during the children's moment, I forgot Zechariah's name. In the middle of talking I went blank. I took New Testament survey, I am good with Bible facts, I had just read the story. I completely froze. Then when we went downstairs we discovered that tape wasn't strong enough to hold the "Advent Wreath." Most of the candles fallen down. When we went to use the teaching media the computer rejected the DVD files. There were three different media players and none of them would work. We ended up standing around my office computer, which was crowded but thankfully it happened in the first service because there would never be enough room for everyone in the second service to fit. Because of the technical delays I was still hot gluing crafts when parents were ready to go. That meant the Christmas musical practice started late and ended late. We also couldn't use the CD because the AMAZING! IT guy was finding a video solution for the second service.

The second service's children's moment went well. Then while heading downstairs it dawned on me, both youth that run the sound & computer in the second service had been in the first service. One of the youth helpers had on the spot training, which just added to the fun because the computer continued to be grumpy. I believe in AI...computers hate me. This is when all of Kidsworld paused to pray that things would work, for joy, and that Pastor Liz would have patience and not throw the computer out a window.

The next hiccup came at craft time. I had prepared two extras then our average Sunday kid attendance. There were more than I had planned on, which is a good thing, it just made for some interesting moments. We found extra plates, they were Styrofoam. Styrofoam and hot glue don't play nice with each other. I printed more sheets so everyone had a set. The youth helpers were keep busing cutting extra ribbons, handing out supplies, solving problems, and generally helping me not lose my mind. The most "intense" stress was we ran out of clothes pins. I took apart my sample for a set, I repair a few that had split apart for another set, but in the end we were still three sets short. The solution? I macgyvered bobby-pins to Popsicle sticks.

The theme at Kidsworld for this advent season is Joy. "Joy: finding how to be happy even when it is difficult. " And that is what made today hilarious to me, I became today's children's moment. I became a walking, breathing, living object lesson. No matter what happened the phrase came back to my head and I had to laugh. I had to choose Joy. Everything I said and did reminded me that I can have joy because I trust that God keeps his promises. Today we lit the first candle of Advent, the candle of Hope. Hope is having faith that God will keep his promises even when it is difficult. This morning, whenever something didn't go as I had expected I had to stop and remind myself of the truth I was teaching.Hope is choosing to trust that God will do what He promises.

Kidsworld Crafts: Advent Wreath

I love discovering new ways the family and church traditions together. It is part of the whole reThink "Orange Concept" I am trying to make a practical part of my life and ministry. One of my favourite childhood Christmas traditions was the Advent calendar and lighting the Advent candles at church. So I was excited a few year's ago when I got to be apart of a family living out orange.

I had been invited over for Sunday dinner. On entering the dinning room I noticed neat candle centerpiece on the table. It was an arch with a purple, pink, white, then two more purple candles. As I looked at it I thought, hey that's like an Advent wreath. Just before dinner I discovered I had been right, it was like an Advent wreath when I was invited to join them in an advent themes family devotional that included lighting some of the candles.

I was reminded of that family while preparing for Kidsworld this week. We were celebrating the first Sunday of Advent and I wanted to help families continue celebrating Advent at home. After a google search for inspiration I decided on creating paper plate Advent wreath. If you want to make your own Advent Wreath

You Will Need:

paper plate (we used festive plates)
five clothes pins
an envelope (preferably smaller than the plate)
ribbon about 10cm (5 inches)
glue (we used hot glue)
five "flames"
markers, crayons or paint

What To Do:

Draw or print five candle flames on paper. Have children colour and cut out the flames. We also wrote the four words associated with Advent (Hope, Peace, Joy, Love) written on the flames. Put these "flames" in the envelope so they don't get lost.
Colour the five clothes pins. If you want to follow the traditional Advent colour three candles are purple, one is pink, and one is white.
Attach the envelope to the back. We found it worked best when we glued the fullest part of the envelop to the plate leaving the flap side visible. it also made it easier to pull out the flames.
Attach the five clothes pins to the front.
Attach the ribbon as a loop to the back.

Adaptations:
I was inspired by a number of different wreath crafts so I know there are a lot of different ways mine could be improved. Here are a few suggestions:

Placing the clothes pins is really up to you. A few kids spreed them around the plate. Some wanted them all at the bottom or all at the top. One girl wanted all here flames to point in. Someone else wanted all their flames to point out. Most didn't care.
Instead of using a paper plate, make the wreath out of green painted hand prints or cut out green construction paper hand prints.
This is was on of the crafts that inspired my wreath. They used cardboard tubes (toilet paper rolls) to make a great three-dimensional wreath.
Attach a magnet to the back of the plate so the wreath can be keep on the fridge.
Cut out the center of the plate to make it look more wreath like.
Use extra decorating supplies like sticker, ribbons, old Christmas cards, craft foam, or glitter to jazz the wreath up.
Allow the children the freedom to be creative. We had a few kids who wanted rainbow candles, that was cool.
Some of the kids added words like "Merry Christmas" to the center and someone else suggested that you could glue a family photo in that space"

Tips for Large Groups:

Handout the envelop, flames, and clothespins to the children. Keep the paper plates and ribbon by the glue gun station.
Before kids start cutting or colouring have the write their names on the envelope. We asked them to write on the side with the flap. So that we could identify whose was whose after everyone was done.
Remind children to put their cut out flames in their envelope. This helps to keep flames from getting lost or accidentally recycled.
If you have enough adults and glue guns make the gluing an assembly line. One person glues the envelope on the back, next attach the clothes pins (this might require a few different glue guns as it takes the most time and the line bottlenecks), and the next person adds the ribbon.
Ask kids were they want the clothes pins before gluing. I would ask them where they wanted there first "candle" they would point, I added a glob of glue and stuck it there. It helped to keep them interested and encouraged their creativity, which is always a challenge when adults are needed to assemble.
Have an activity planned for the children finished first. It could be a singing time, another craft, or game that anyone can join as they finish up. We had a video connected with our them ready to go.

Write All Night

The night ended at 8:00am this morning when I crawled into bed but it started with live music. The Chimney Swifts had a house concert and it was grand! I love them! They were great and I can't wait till they have a CD. About 10:30pm, after three sets, I walked over to the Wolfville Wrimos Second Annual Write All Night (it happens every year -that's why it's annual).

The purpose was to write, write, write. I think there was more eat, chat, giggle, chat, eat, write, chat, 4am run to MacDonald's, eat, write, chat, giggle, eat or something like that. My personal word goal was 5000. I managed to put 3,673 words in some type of structure that resembles prose.While it might not have been my best writing ever it was some of the most enjoyable nonsense I have written this month. The lack of sleep lead to some neat additions to my story. This was my favourite twist that began around 2am:

Farwin, our heroic dragon, is going to be eaten by giant spiders if the Hopscotch the iguana cannot enlist the help of a herd of flying moose (flying meece?)

It will need a lot of work in December and beyond but I really like the Sisterhood of Spiders and the Elder Sister who leads the clan of over sized arachnids. The night was wonderful. It is hard to put the 12hours (9 that I was there for) into words so I am going to end with some quotes that stood out to me -my apologies some of them were funnier at 3am:

Shari Prime

Shari is wonderful! She is sweet, and wise, and fully of integrity and compassion. She is great to talk with and hang out with and just know. I love having tea with her, actually I love any chance we get to sit down and chat. Our lives keep us both going and it seems we only get a moment here or a hug there but I cherish each one. She is one of my girls and I love her. I am truly thankful for Shari! She is wonderful and I hope she knows it!

I'm also very thankful that she and Scott have a vehicle with four wheel drive and were willing to drive me home last night....or I would have had a sleepover at the church. I definitely appreciated the drive (and this is not the first time I needed them to rescue me in snowy weather.) Yay for Scott and Shari!

The Dragons Mourn

It is a sad time for sci-fi fans, Anne McCaffrey, the creator of the Dragons of Pern series has died at the age of 85. I have nothing to add that hasn't been said by Wall Street Journal and Digital Journal. Just that it makes me sad. I've been reading her words since high school. I've been struggling to describe or even give a good name and title to the leader of the dragons the Master Keeper (head of the dragons in my world). I think I'm going to re-create the character to be a tribute to Anne McCaffry. Hope that does not come off as trite or cheap; it is what I have to say good-bye to an author I enjoy and respect.

There is so much good NaNoNews!

First, it's ML Appreciation Day, have you your ML yet? Cause the NS::Elsewhere have. It is unbelievablely awesome all the joy and joyful they showered upon me. The show of love was beyond the moon. OH MY THEY ARE AWESOME! Awesome and organized. It was grand. It started with envelopes with cards for free coffee given to me every fifteen minutes before. For me the thanks and free caffeine would have been enough but then came the gifts. WOW! I was loved. A knit plot bunnies, nano-themed scarf, candles, pens, a notebook, a heart full of words, and a VIP subscription to my favourite writing magazine. Yay for not having to buy it off the rack. I LOVE THESE WRITERS!

Second, I passed the half way mark last night! 25,000 words -done! I am choosing to ignore the fact that the half way point was a week ago.

Third, next years plot idea, brainstorming, and working title is figured out.

Fourth, I'm on a roll gathering points so here is the calendar I made:

I love getting ready for NaNoWriMo. Half the fun, for me, is coming up with new ideas for events. Last year, during my preparation, I discovered the "Great Points Race" another region was using to help keep people motivated. After contacting the MLs organizing the race I adapted the points race for my region.

During November writers can earn points. There are points for reaching word count goals or showing up at write-ins. Other points require some more effort like making a donation to the Office of Letters and Lights (the non-profit that runs NaNoWriMo), sharing your writing space in the forums, or for catching up to five plot bunnies. At the TGIO party the person with the most points has first pick of the prizes. The second highest will have second pick till and so on till all the prizes have been given out.

I've been maintaining sixth place and haven't taken advantage of writing space or plot bunny points...till now. First, my writing space. I write where ever my netbook is. This year it seems to be TAN or Jenn's couch. If I'm home I tend to write on the floor next to my bed. Ta da -writing space (for 50 points):

I loved my 2009 nano-novel "Across Eldamar." It was the first story post-nano that I actually wanted to edit. Only the actual editing is taking longer than I had expected. One afternoon mid-winter 2010 I decided to try a cafe a friend recommended while working on the second draft. I was suck and uninspired. I wanted to give up and shove the story in a folder to collect dust.

The cafe had a local artist's work on the walls. It was all seemed to be set in this epic adventurous world. As I played with the wording and story ideas the art encouraged me to keep going. It gave voice to the world, almost like it showed me what my world could be like. I loved everything. It was beautiful. I wanted to buy every piece. I asked who the artist was and was told it was a guy in Wolfville. The girl gave me a website and I found where I could buy the first of his comics. Without that afternoon I think I would have given up. For this reason I am thankful for...

Mark Oakley

His paintings and art work inspire me. I love them. My Hal-Con costume was based on one of his characters -I am a fangirl. But I appreciate Mark for more than just the comics and paintings. Since that afternoon in the cafe we've met. It think it was through Donna. And then we got to know each other and hang out. I was so surprised that this amazing artist who had inspired me and saved my working wanted to be my friend, it's awesome. We are friends. He is a great addition to the writing group when he can make it. I love his stories and ideas. I love listening to him talk about anything. I love days when we bump into each other and sit down for a chat about anything and everything. He is such a neat person.

I wish everyone could meet me friend Mark. He is fantastic. I love his perceptive, sincerity, joy, creativity, and passion. He cares about people and listens. He writes great stories and exciting adventures. And I love when he gets excited and does his happy with life bouncing dance. It is for those reasons I am truly thankful to call Mark my friend!

Making a Weekend Sundae

The NaNoWriMo site is down, again, so I am unable to update my word count making this a perfect moment to recount my favourite moments from the weekend. And the metaphor I'm using is a yummy tasty sundae cause I like ice cream and I liked Hal-Con (and I am sleep deprived and my brain is being silly).

If this weekend were a sundae then the ice cream were the people I spend it with. Ice cream is the foundation of a good sundae and so were my friends. I love my people. They are great; they made Hal-Con awesome. I think I would have been happy sitting and chatting with them the whole time. That would have been good enough but the fun didn't stop there....there was more than just ice cream. There were tasty toppings:

1) Mark Oakley knowing and liking my costume.
2) Earning a free book in a writing panel for asking a good question and being witty.
3) All the costumes. There were so many amazing characters. Once Re uploads her pictures I will share them.
4) Good moderators
5) The Inner Space guy remembering my names hours after we chatted
6) Someone asking for my picture because they thought my costume was well made.
7) Making plans for a group costume for next years Hal-Con
8) Making connections with two authors to possible visit Best Word.

NaNo Novel-ing Update

Did I just add spitball warrior iguanas to my novel?

I think I did.

I love the desert warrior iguanas they entered the story last night in a writing challenge to include cherry pie, an iguana, a silver dollar, and a spitball fight. Writing prompts and "I dares yous" are making writing fun. Other than those challenges the noveling is going well...ish. I am starting to like the concept of my story and there have been some unexpected silliness that makes writing fun. The biggest issue at the moment is catching on word count. My current daily average has me finishing January 8th, 2012.

This is one of my favourite scenes so far:

Tray decided magical clouds were horrible creatures. If she never had to fly by cloud again it would be too soon. The journey had started well enough. She was dry and content then her cloud got into an argument with passing cloud. The disagreement escalated into a full thunder storm that left Tray soaked and cold for the last half of the flight. Clouds are very temperamental.

Hal-Con was the bestest of weekends. There was so much joy and joyfulness hanging out with friends, seeing all the costumes, dressing up, sitting in on workshops, and just plain geeking out. There were so many highlights that covering everything in a single post would be silly. Over the next few days I am going to try to cover my favourite starting with the writing workshops.

Most of the panels and workshops I sat in on were about writing or storytelling. I connected with two Nova Scotia writers and talked about them visiting my writing group. I won a book in one panel for asking a good question and being witty. And I bought a writing book that I think is going to be very useful for planning future workshops for writing group. I enjoyed all the tips and answers the I gathered. This is what I learned or was reminded of:

1) Story is king -it is the point so make it good. Everything else is a device to help or hinder the main character
2) Create a dossier, scrapbook, or a binder with important details like characters, pictures, notes, timelines to help visualize the novel and keep facts consistent
3) Write short stories in the same world and with same characters to better understand how the universe operates
4) Have faith in your reader, they won’t get lost, start in the middle but give them a direction and a character to care about.
5) Don’t give the reader all the answer. Give hints and the promises of answers.
6) Create complex characters and let them be true to who they are
7) The action and pace of YA books are faster
8) Teens don’t have set expectations about a novel so experimenting with point of view and other elements is more acceptable
9) If you want to write for teens you need to like teens and respect teens and spend time with teens and get to know them.
10) How do you starting writing...you turn on the computer and write
11) Write it six times before showing it to a proof reader/beta
12) Write, then edit, but write first
13) Read stuff out loud
14) When you are reading, even silently, you breath at the punition marks. Short choppy sentences gives a feel of excitement in the reader subconsciously. This works for actions scenes.
15) The term "voice" has two uses in writing. The writer has a voice and the characters have voice.
16) If you feel like a adverb is needed you are using the wrong verb
17) Repetition of patterns (he said, she said, he said, she said) boring and editors will trash the manuscript
18) Great heroes worth reading have flaws
19) Readers like complex characters. Get people emotionally connected and you have them hooked.

I am thankful for...Steven and Hannah -they are awesome and made Katara costume possible. Also, Re and Justine because they've made my weekend so much fun.

From the kitchen...it's the middle of NaNoWriMo there is no cooking at home. Friday Night the boys club at the church had a spaghetti supper. It was awesome, the food was great and I didn't have to cook or do the dishes.

I am wearing...currently in my pjs debating wearing the Katara costume a second day or going in jeans and a tee with my "doctor" blazer. I could borrow Re's sonic screwdriver.

I am creating...there are projects on the go but November is all about finishing the nano-novel.

I am going...to the second day of Hal-Con.

I am reading...between books -it's November.

I am hoping...to catch up on my nano word count I have 10,008 I should be at 21,1667 by the end of the day. It's not going to happen but I do need a catch up writing day soon.

Introducing Katara

Today I stepped into a new world of imagination at Hal-Con and it was wonderfully fun. This is my first convention. It is also my first attempt at a making a costume for a con. As soon as I knew that I was going with my friends I began considering costume ideas. There were so many possibilities. Then I found out Mark Oakley was going. Mark is the incredible indie comic creator of Thieves and Kings and Stardrops (a strip that runs in the Wolfville Grapevine). I decided that I would go as his character Katara. This is how it turned out:

My greatest fear today was seeing Mark and him not knowing who I was dressed up. I had nothing to fear. Mark's reaction was...word's do not express how wonderful his reaching was. Thankfully Re and Justine took many pictures of the moment and all the great moments from today. Once they have pictures up I'll share all the joy and pretty costumes. A HUGE, HUGE, HUGE thank you to Hannah and Steven who gave up a day and a night to help make this costume possible.

I've already broken the con survival guide of "3,2,1" -three hours sleep, two meals, and one shower per day. Friday I woke up at 9:30am I had a short 20 min nap Saturday morning at 5am....and it now 1:29am Sunday morning. It is time for bed.

I take the youth group to the beach. So, I have the permission forms for all the kids, sunscreen, bug spray, aloe for the kid that doesn't believe me that he could burn, my own towel, an extra towel or two for the kids that forgot theirs, change of clothes, an extra t-shirt for anyone not in an appropriate youth group swim attire, a book, lunch, snacks to share, juice, water, extra water for the kids that forgot or didn't think they would get thirsty, money for the snack shop, and plus a large blue tub with all the games and things we will be playing with like frisbees and footballs.

I am thankful for...

Hannah

This girl is fantastic! She has so much energy, creativity, joy, and passion. We met this summer shortly after she moved to the area from BC and hit it off. We've got so many hobbies and interests in common that it is a joy to be able to geek over craft supplies with someone.

Last Monday, Hannah volunteered her time and photography skills to take pictures of all the little heroes at my church's Trunk or Treat. It was awesome! And tomorrow she's going to help me create a costume for Hal-Con. I am so excited because we've been wanting to have a craft day for awhile. I'm also excited because there is no way I could get everything done without a friend. For these reasons and just because she is who she is I am very thankful for Hannah!

I was watching youtube the other day, procrastinating, when I found this video 5 Things I Don't Like About Doctor Who:

I love the Doctor and was expecting to hate the video. I was pleasantly surprised;it was well done, humorous, and made some valid points. I especially loved number 2 "Sonic Screwdriver Has Unlimited Functions" (it starts at 1:13).

I think need a sonic screwdriver....I have a huge plot hole!

Late last Friday night, very very late. I was trying to make word count but I was bored with the story. I made the choice to spice things up with an earthquake. The catastrophe killed a minor character. Then I didn't write on Saturday and totally forgot about the earthquake/death by Sunday and have been writing as if neither event happened ever since.

Oh well, I can fix that in December....right?

When I Write and the Search for a Working Title

Yesterday's three hour write-in was successful. I wrote and not just blog articles, forum comments or IM messages. Words were actually added to my novel. This is a cause for a happy dance.

*pause for dancing and merriment*

I realize the success of me writing at a writing event might not seem that monumental to anyone but me but it is. As my area's ML I find that I don't write at writing events. The time is normally spent welcoming new comers, explaining what NaNoWriMo is, answering questions, awarding points (for my regions points race), running word wars, and just being there.

Last night was an exception; I accumulated enough words to move my finish date from December 28th to the 19th (we'll ignore that today's stats is estimating a December 26th finishing date). The night also helped rekindle my interest in the story. I am getting excited about my Moses-dragon-action/adventure/quest-story. I want to find out how Farwin (my dragon) saves the world. I want to figure out how he leads a Eldamar-wide dragon rebellion. Writing is fun again *more celebrating and dancing* I think it still needs a better working title. Working titles help give direction and purpose and might lead to my novel being selected for the 30 Covers in 30 Days. So far I've been using "Let My Dragons Go". I have also considered:

Return to Eldamar
In Search of Wild Dragons
More Than Dragons

Need More Words

NaNoWriMo is entering the second week. I am feeling discouraged about finishing. It has felt like the third week writing blahs since the second day. And the novel stats have NOT been helping. The stats have all these new features that I am guessing should encourage and motivate but they aren't. It tells you how many words you average a day (849). The words you've written today (0). When you will finish if you keep writing that the current rate (Dec 28th). And the most helpful/discouraging the words per day I would need to write to finish on time (1836). I am so far behind and I hate my novel.

There are plot holes, lame characters, cliches, and just bad prose. Not sure where to go with the story next...and I'm procrastinating by finding great NaNo themed songs like this one:

I am thinking...something has to change with my novel or I will never finish it because at this moment I hate everything I have written.

I am thankful for...daylight savings and an extra hour of sleep. Just to explain for those who might not know. I'm a youth pastor and I took a group of my teens to Encounter a two day rally at Bethany Bible College. Last rally ended at 8pm last night...then we drove home. It was a very late night.

From the kitchen...ate cafetria food all weekend (at Encounter) and now my body hates me.

I am wearing...the Supergirl costume, again.

I am creating...there is only noveling happening.

I am going...to sleep for the the next year.

I am reading...who has time to read?

I am hoping...to fix my lost plot and fall in love with my novel.

I'm at BBC with my youth group right now for the annual Encounter (booster) weekend. This might be my favourite one yet. The activities and comedy have been great. I like the "Let's Talk" segments. They gave everyone "mustaches." We went bowling this afternoon. Also Mollie, Seth and I rolled down the big hill (video to come later)

Favourite sermon quote: "you don't want to be religious. Religious people killed Jesus."

Favourite this a kids has said: "Liz, I was hitting people with swords; it was fun."

Only downside has been the lack of free time. My NaNoWriMo writing has suffered.

I am thankful for...

Michael Van Meekeren

I love all the Van Meekerens. They are all great and amazing and awesome family. I think the kids are great because their parents are great. They make me smile. Michael is excellent. What he says matters. What he gets involved in he is passionate about. He loves his wife and his family and it is a joy for me to watch them all interact. I am thankful that he has been a youth leader with the group. He gets involved and does what needs to be done. I love how much he cares about youth. He brings much wisdom to every situation but is able to keep things light and fun. I am very thankful that he'll be driving up to BBC for Encounter with me. I am very thankful for Michael!

The 30 Day Survival Plan

I love NaNoToons. This one made me giggle, well they all made me giggle, but I'll share this one because it is about a stressed out ML:
I'll admit it, I freak out. I'm trying to keep calm but there is a lot going on this month. Everything is happening this month. My goals, beyond completing a novel and being the best ML possible, making sure the cats get feed, there is no science experiments growing in my fridge, and that I don't completely burn out. In past years I've armed self with chocolate, tea, and many phone calls to my mum (she talks me out of panic mode). I do not thing these things will be enough this year. There is more on my plate and too many things I can't forget.

My solution: The 30 Day Survival Binder. The idea was not original with me, I discovered the FLYlady's Control Journal in August and adapted my binder to fit the next 30 days. My binder has everything in it. EVERYTHING -calendars, shopping lists, checklists, pep talks, lesson plans, daily routines, contact information, schedules, to do lists, and pictures that inspire me. If it is important then it has a section. So far is a section for:

all things NaNo related from ML duties (including keeping track of the great points race) to novel planning
general apartment care, cleaning routines, and the 20/20 home cure
menu planning and shopping lists
NaBloPoMo reminders and blogging ideas
Church details and reminders like children's Christmas musical, Trunk or Treat follow up and Youth Group
Christmas Planning
I need to add Hal-Con section and knitting projects.

I've been using the binder for the past two weeks and it have become a strange mix of security blanket and life line. I do not know how I would keep track of everything without the binder....wait I just wouldn't and the cats wouldn't get feed till December 1st. Don't get me wrong, I still need chocolate, calls to my mum, caffeine, chocolate, friends, downtime, games nights, and chocolate. I just need something to organize the rest of my life till November is over.The cats are thankful for the binder.

Let the Writing Begin

November is here!

Happy Anniversary to my wonderful parents!
Happy November First!

Early this morning, about a half hour after November began so did my novel writing. It was painful. The words are just not coming out. It is going to be a long month. It's the first day and I have writer's block.

In past year’s by mid-September I’ve had outlines and ideas and scenes all mapped out in my head and a title or a possible working title. By the last week of October I was counting down the hours till I could write. This year...nothing. Well, a little something. I started getting the first hints of ideas about a week ago.

My main character is a dragon, I’m setting it back in Eldamar with it’s magical talking clouds, giant pigs, and witty trolls. It’s going be a story about friendship, hope, and liberation. I was talking about it with some friends and they commented that it was a dragon Moses story something like “Let My Dragons Go”. Yep, something like that yet I still don’t know what to call it and I’m looking for title suggestions. Any idea what I could call my novel about a dragon freeing the dragons? If so leave a comment, if there are enough suggestions I might open title selecting to a vote.

Also Happening This Month:
Day Seven of the 20/20 Home Cure -buy more flowers for the apartment. I’m going to do that on my drive home.

NaBloPlMo -posting everything day in November. We'll see how that goes.

The trunks are empty, the games won, the crowns created, cookies decorated and eaten, massive dark maze solved and that candy has been given out. The kids are home being tucked into bed and all the clean up is finished. This year's "Heroes Unmasked" Trunk or Treat was a super success!

This is one of my favorite events every year and it would not have been possible without everyone who took parts help. A thousand thank yous to each and everyone of you who made all the joy and fun of Trunk or Treat possible. So, thank you! Thank you to those who stood out in the cold and handed out candy, the coffee makers and photographers. Thank you to the donators of candy, painters of signs, and decorates. Thank you to the tear down crew that wrangled chairs back into rows and swept up floors. Thank you to the youth who worked for hours creating our largest and most challenging maze yet. Thank you to the volunteers who ran games, and crafts, and cookie decorating. Thank who to the families that worked together to volunteer. Thank you to those who came early to lend a hand and those who stayed late till the last job was done. Thank you to those who greeted guest, talked with families, and made this night welcoming and friendly. With all my heart I thank you!!!

This was our fifth year holding a Trunk or Treat at the church (first year we did a harvest party a few weeks earlier with pumpkin carving and other activities and last year we held the event one night earlier because of the set up time needed conflicted with Oct 31 being of Sunday). There was so much fun...and so much to set up. Earlier today, about mid-morning, after my fifth or sixth trip up and down the stairs I decided to strap on a step counter just to see how much walking I actually did today. I walked 14, 280 steps. According to a graph I found online that is 5.8 miles according to the actual step counter it was 6.5 miles.

One adventure is completed...2hrs and 55min till the next begins. NaNoWriMo writing begins and midnight and I finally think I might have a workable plot.

TV Talk: Reality Shows

I had posters to paint this afternoon. While I worked I caught up on a few shows starting with the season 9 Project Runway finale. I was totally surprised by the episode. When I watched the previous episode I had missed the very end. I had seen that Kim was in so I assumed that my favourite Anya was out. It's silly but I almost didn't watch the finale cause I didn't care enough about who won. I thought for sure it would be Victor with a chance for Josh.

I was so surprised by the recap to learn that the judges had kept all four designers. Of all the fashion shows/finales this was my favourite. Everyone has something interesting in their collection. I was glad I wasn't having to decided the winner. After seeing collects, I was rooting for Anya but had expected Josh to win. I was very surprised that Anya was the judges choice. You can see her whole collection at Lifetime TV Project Runway site. The dress shown was my favourite piece in her fashion show collection.

After Project Runway I watched this past week's Survivor: Pacific Island "Trojan Horse" episode. I am not sure how I feel about Coach's prayers. Up until this week I've been rooting for Coach to win. He's a strong competivie player and this is the first time watching him play the game that I don't think he's a joke. However he seems to be using "faith" the control the team. I agree with one of the girls that praying to find the idol when you have the idol is slimy.

The more interesting aspect was Ozzy asking to be voted out. This was either incredibly smart or the biggest mistake in Survivor history (and there have been so horrible slips). This is his thinking. The merge is going to happen, the girl on Redemption Island has won five challenges. If he goes to the duel and defeats her he'll return to his tribe a hero and give them the numbers at the merge. This plan rests on two big assumptions 1) the merge is happening next and 2) that he'll win the duel. Ozzy might not win the challenge. He has no idea what the duel will involve. It might not be something he can win and all of the duels this season have been close. The other big issue is the tribe's strength. If the merge doesn't happen then the tribe is down a strong player. A loss would mean they would be down two or more votes at the merge. This choice might have set them up for a losing streak. It's a huge risk....which is going to make next week's episode fun to watch. I'm hoping it goes as Ozzy plans but kind would like to see it fail to...I feel horrible for that.

PLOT BUNNY: All this reality show talk reminds me of a plot idea I got at Tuesday's NaNo information meeting. The title of the novel would be "Losing Reality" and it would be about someone trying to figure life out post-losing of a reality show. It could be any show but I think something like a failed-hopeful-Bachelor-bride would have trust and dating issues with a new hatred for roses that would make for a compelling story.

This one is actually good: I fend off the blues by journaling, praying, being creative, listening to Superchick, boardgames, visiting friends, calling Best Friend, eating food, and hugs always help.

The task today is to buy or replace a green cleaner which is wonderful because I needed to make a trip to EOS for more Castile soup for a green cleaner laundry recipe I like from Naturally Clean Home by Karyn Siegel-Maier.

I am thankful for...

Mollie Van Meekeren

First, let me explain the picture, it was from the Alice in Wonderland themed thrift shop formal, yep.

On with the blogging, I met Mollie my first Sunday at the church five years ago. She's going to graduate this year...time flies. But it's been wonderful knowing her. She is creative, and resourceful, and hilarious, and fun, easy to talk with, and just great. Also she has participated in NaNoWriMo with me the past three years. I spent the afternoon with Mollie. She was helping me get ready for trunk or treat. There were so many little tasks I could not have done without her and on top of that errands and decorating are much more fun with a friend. I am thankful for Mollie -yay Mollie!

The 20/20 Home Cure -Day 3:
Today's task is finding inspirational photos. I already had a picture folder from last year that I just added too. This is what I love about the Home Cure, the tasks are simple, motivating, and actually help. I have also found Maxwell's video of the day very helpful and encouraging. I think they are reusing last year's videos which makes me sad. I was hoping for new insights.

I have found defining "my style" difficult but I know what I like when I see it. By saving a collection of pictures I can compare later and find the themes I want to recreate in my own space. To gather images I visited my favourite design blog An Indian Summer and checked out a few Maxwell suggested. I really liked Home to Home: Living Etc. What I've noticed is I like natural rustic wood, piles of books, collections of pictures, and splash of colour either green or red (normally an accent piece like a chair or a single wall).

It’s the last week of October; when did that happen? There are only six days till November and the crazy adventure that is NaNoWriMo. SIX DAYS! Who sped up time? I feel like I've missed this month, but I didn't. I request a special extra week between Oct 31 and Nov 1st . And yes, I forgot again there isn’t time between trunk or treat and the start of novel writing…..again *sigh*

Wolfville Wrimos Kick-Off
Last night was the first NaNoWriMo event of 2011. I was nervous that no one would show up but people came and we pre-nanoed. I handed out calendars and important information, had a few activities, and we played Once Upon a Time. It was a great group; my only concern about NaNo at the moment is my lack of plot ideas. Normally I have a full outline, characters, the conclusion, and a few key scenes floating around in my brain. At the moment all I know is that there will be dragons.

Day 2
I found out today that Apartment Therapy’s 20/20 Home Cure is back! I don't really have the time to participate but I really like the challenges...so I'm going to try. Today's task. Buy flowers which I am going to go do right after I post this.

I am thinking...there is so much to do; why does everything happen the week before for November or in November? And as is traditional, I forgot again that there isn't a week between October 31 and November 1st....nope. I am concerned about my lack of plot ideas for this year's dragon themed NaNoWriMo novel. Normally I have too many ideas and just want to start writing.

I am thankful for...unexpected good surprises like founding missing (very overdue) library books. Downside, I had just bought replacement books. Upside I can keep the replacements.

From the kitchen...with my new cookbooks (the replacements) I'm going to make a month menu plan and shopping list. I think it will help me survive NaNo without relying of MacDonald's for meals.

I am wearing...a Supergirl costume.

I am creating...started a new knit shawl, the baby blanket (it should be done but the errors have killed my motivation...after they're fix there is only a row to go and it will be DONE!) Need to actually paint the Chimney Swifts t-shirts. The biggest project is a costume for Hal-Con.

I am going...to have a Liz day. I need to unwind, relax, and refocus. I've been really off lately, my head hasn't been clear, and I'm not recovering for off-moments as quickly as normal. I'm in an "off" rut. Today I'm going to start climbing out.

I am reading...I just got a whole bunch of shiny new books and I want to read them all, not sure where I am going to start but reading will be happening.

I am hoping...to make realistic plans for the next few weeks so everything can be done on time.

Around the house...there is stuff and clutter and piles and boxes and stuff everywhere. I have victory over a small section and then become overwhelmed again. I feel like I take one step forward and two back....however a friend who has seen it at it's worst surprise visited and commented how successful the decluttering is going so YAY! I'll keep at it.

One of my favorite things...the annual Ten Thousand Villages fair-trade sale. All my Christmas shopping is done!

I am thankful for...

AuroraLee a.ka. Justine

Justine is one of my wonderful writing friends. She is a fellow Wolfville Wrimo and an original Best Word buddy. I first knew Justine as "Cprav" the first year I was a volunteer (Municipal Liaison or ML) for National Novel Writing Month. I've enjoyed how our acquaintance has moved from forums to friendship. We click; we both like sci-fi and fantasy shows, books, movies. We're both thinking about doing dragon themed novels. So, really, we're both just girl-geeks, so much so that we are going to Hal-Con together (squeeee HAL CON!).

More that just those fun things Justine is witty, creative, and caring. I love talking with her because of her insightful. She is also motivated, dedicated, and passionate. She is so supportive of the writing group and everything NaNo related. She has great knowledge and skills in areas I'm not good in (I'm a luddite) and is very willing share with me. I am so very grateful to know Justine and count her as a friend. And those are a few of the reason I am thankful for her....and that I love her writing!
