Disney Disasters

It’s been a week of Disney. Been doodling Disney characters, humming the songs. So on Wednesday I rented The Hunchback of Nortre Dame. Two days later rented Mulan and Hercules, I hoped that watching the latter would help get “I Can Go the Distance” out of my head. Instead, it just reminded me of why I never liked it in the first place. Hercules and Home on the Range are movies Disney should never have made.

What do you think is the worst Classic Disney Movie* of all times?

*The use of “Classic Disney” is for those movies the company has decided/announced as part of the “Masterpiece” Collection. Currently there have been forty-four Disney Masterpieces released. The use of Masterpiece could be debated since some flicks just flopped.

I'd go with either Atlantis, one that I plan never to watch again, or lilo and Stitch, one that I plan to never see. On a brighter note, Robin Hood is my personal favorite, quickly followed by the Fantasias. But then the music ones are pretty much givens for me.

Snow white. It doesn't teach good lessons to girls about self-worth and fulfillment....if you want me to go on a diatribe explaining this, I am willing, but for now, I will restrain myself!
If I had or ever have a daughter, she will not be spending hours watching Snow White...

I'm pretty sure that I'd peg Pocahontas as the worst "classic" Disney film, though I haven't seen Treasure Planet - which ripped off the entire concept of airships (boats that fly) from the Final Fantasy games.

If "classic" were not attached, we'd all agree that any sequel that Disney has made are utter failures.

As far as the best? I'd give a hearty "Oodillallie!" to Robin Hood!

Combs, I love the first Fantasia, haven't seen the second yet but the cover looks pretty so I think I'd like it. Yes this is a case of judging a book by its cover.

Jo, would your feeling towards Snow White have to do with the song "Someday my prince will come" or the finding beauty from a talking mirror, or another deeper issue? Same thought what do you think of Mulan? which is one of my favourites.

Yes, Pocahontas was horrible, but I still think Hercules was worst. Almost everything after the Lion King just hasn't been great. exceptions being The Emperor's New Groove cause it made me laugh. Fantasia 2000 cause i haven't seen it and Mulan.

Hmmm. Well, I just don't think Snow White is a good role model. I mean, when an unfortunate event occured her course of action was to escape into the woods---making no preparation, not knowing where she was going, or what dangers were out there. Then, she happens to talk to seven men (dwarves) who are strangers and within the same day decides that they are safe enough to live with. Now, I believe in servanthood and the importance of housewifery, so I suppose that it is not a negative thing that snow white cleaned, swept, did dishes and laundrey for these men-dwarves. BUT she did this with no thought for her future? What did she think she was going to do? Spend her whole life with the dwarves? She was not pro-active, she was always simply trying to escape a circumstance....It's a good thing that eventually a prince did show up but she did not KNOW that he would appear in her life....

Next, I would say yes, I have a problem with the stepmother queen finding her worth in being declared the most externally beautiful of them all. What if snow what had NOT been more physically beautiful? Would that mean that the evil queen was? So I guess those are just a few of the complexities.

Isn't "Some day my prince will come" a song in Sleeping Beauty and not Snow White? Maybe my memory is wrong....

Sleeping beauty...now there's another one. Cinderella too. They all imply that women's happiness is dependent upon a man coming into her life; that a man can make everything ALL better and they can just remain a victim of their circumstances without taking any other necessary proactive measures.

anyway, wow. that was a rant! ;) I AM a romantic sometimes, really, I am!.....
