An Invitation to Join a Book Study That Requires No Reading
Hello Friends,
I would like to invite you to a book study with no required reading. The book is Sacred Rhythms: Arranging Our Lives for Spiritual Transformation by Ruth Haley Barton. Sacred Rhythms looks at ancient Christian practices and spiritual disciplines that open our lives to God's transforming love and power. Owning or reading the book is not required to participate.
How it will work is that before the study I will read the chapter. During the first part of our online gathering I will give a summary of the chapter highlighting key thoughts, quotes, and ideas that stood out to me. I'll also have questions for us to discuss the points and share our thoughts. We'll end with a practice or exercise connected to the spiritual discipline we learned about in the chapter.
This is going to be a live, online sharing discussion on Thursday nights starting at 7:30 pm. The first online meeting will be Thursday, May 14, 2020. I am undecided about which online service would be the best for this sort of gathering. The two options are 1) Facebook using the live streaming. This would be the same as Pastor Thomas' Tuesday Bible Study. Discussion would happen through the comment feature which I would read out loud. It would remain visible to other Facebook friends. 2) Google Meet. This would be a closed group, similar to our communion meeting we recently held, which would include open discussion among all members that would require your phone number or email for an invitation going out each week. It would be more intimate and not recorded. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.
If this interests you, please sign up below and share which of the type of live online interaction you would prefer. I will not be able to offer both and will choose the more popular option. I will contact you on Wednesday, May 13th with details of the study method chosen and how you can connect.
